What is Phu Phan Hey?

Phu Phan Hey is the tender heart of peach palm (Bactris gasipaes), a palm from the tropical rainforests of Central and South America. In Thailand it was first grown seriously in Sakon Nakhon by Dr. Kritsada Jaksen, who brought in the seeds and has studied and grown it for more than 10 years.

The name comes from local villagers, who heard "peach palm" and turned it into a name that fits their home in the Phu Phan mountains. It stuck.

Why it is good

High protein for a plantThe heart has 22.47 g of protein per 100 g (dry weight), and the leaves 17.4 g.
Crunchy and lightly sweetCrisp texture with a gentle sweetness. Eat it raw or cooked; it works in Thai and Western dishes alike.
Plant once, harvest for yearsIt starts producing in year 3 and lives 50 to 70 years. Cut the heart and new shoots keep growing back.
Almost every part is usefulThe heart for cooking, sweet rich fruit, flowers for tea, leaves for animal feed and the trunk for furniture.
